TIM KELLY

TIM

While persuing a Masters degree
at the University of Vermont, Tim fell in with a crowd of homebrewers, and it has become his passion since.  After working as an educator and engineer, Tim decided change careers and follow his passion of brewing.  Upon receiving his degree in Brewing Science & Engineering from the American Brewers Guild, Tim went to work for Flying Fish Brewing Company in Cherry Hill, where he started as a part time employee and ended up as Assistant Brewer.  During that period, Tim also brewed at the Tun Tavern over the summer of 2004, to assist the then injured brewer of the Tun Tavern.  Tim has now been brewmaster of Tun Tavern since May of 2007.

JOHN FRATZ

TIM

John joined Lancaster Malt Brewing Company in 1996 after spending 29 years at the Baltimore Sun where he retired as National (Divisional) Advertising Manager.  In 1998, Lancaster Malt Brewing Co. filed for bankruptcy protection.  The stockholders asked John to operate the company after they fired the founder of LMB.  The plan was that new investors would be found within six months and the company could emerge from bankruptcy.  Almost four years later this occurred, and the new Lancaster Brewing Co. began operations.  Throughout the difficult years LMB maintained a reputation for superior beers.  Christian Heim, who was master brewer when LMB opened in 1995, continues to oversee the brewing operations at Lancaster Brewing Company today.
Lancaster Brewing, under John’s sales leadership and with the quality products available to consumers, has over the last couple years been one of the fastest growing craft beer producers on the east coast.  Year round bottle products such as Amish 4 Grain, Hop Hog IPA, Strawberry Wheat, and Milk Stout continue to win awards and raves from enthusiastic craft beer lovers over a five state area.  Lancaster offers three seasonal bottle products; Oktoberfest, Winter Warmer, and the new in 2008, Rare Rooster Summer Rye.  A dozen or so year-round and seasonal draft products are available at the Lancaster Pub and Restaurant, as well as many specialty beer bars in its market area.

“History” with John Fratz, Vice-President of Lancaster Brewing Co.
At the Atlantic City Food & Wine Festival

HISTORY OF BEER FROM COLONIAL TIMES TO PRESENT
John’s seminar/presentation will cover the history and importance of beer in America, from Colonial Times to the present and a look ahead to the future of beer in this country.  John’s knowledge of beer, “from Colonial times to the present,” is not because he has lived it, as has been suggested by one of his co-workers, but because of fondness and appreciation of beer and its history.
