Matías Fraga was born in the seacoast city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the age of 12, he moved with his family to the countryside in Mendoza, Argentina’s most famous wine region. He did not yet know that this place of mountains and vineyards at the foot of the Andes would capture so much of his attention.
Wine entered Matias’ professional life very early on. While studying marketing in college, he took a loan and bought a small gourmet store named “Azafrán.” Over the next two years, he turned Azafrán into a famous restaurant and opened a wine store at the Hyatt, the first five-star hotel in the city of Mendoza. By age 27, he was a successful entrepreneur running a holding company that owned a wine distributor, three successful restaurants, and two of the most important wine stores in Mendoza.
With this background in wine trade, Matias had the opportunity to taste many Argentine wines, to meet influential winemakers, and to learn about all aspects of the wine industry. Once he built his solid company, he decided to step aside from its operation and focus his energies on his two biggest passions: wine and marketing.
Today, Matias is the General Manager for Bodegas Escorihuela Gascon. This position involves all the elements of communications, marketing and sales of Don Miguel Gascon around the world. He believes that Argentine wines have been a well-kept secret for too long and hopes to share his passion for Argentine wines here in the U.S.
In his free time, Matias enjoys running, playing tennis, windsurfing, and painting.
